It is an extremely detailed map of the Istrian peninsula, designed in the manner of the so-called Lafreri schools. The map shows Istria from a southwest perspective, with a richly elaborated relief, a point representation of the sea and two sailing ships. The accentuated mountains in the northern part are especially noteworthy, which give it an almost Gothic character, in contrast to the usual undulating hills typical of Lafreri's cartographic style.
The map is based on Pietro Coppa's map of Istria from 1525, which is also mentioned in the dedication. The differences in precision between the western and eastern parts of the peninsula can be explained by the political circumstances of the time: the western part of Istria was under Venetian rule and more accessible to Copp for measurements, while the eastern part was under Habsburg rule. Only one copy of Copp's original map is known today.
The map appears in Antonio Lafreri's catalog, which suggests that Lafreri had the right to distribute it in Rome. The Lafreri school is a group of cartographers, engravers and publishers who worked in Rome and Venice in the middle and second half of the 16th century. Among the most famous representatives were Giacomo Gastaldi and Paolo Forlani.
