Summary

Michael Baigent, Richard Leigh: The Elixir and the Stone

The Legacy of Magic and Alchemy

In this book, the authors explain their view that the occult return - like, after all, the entire revolution of thought and attitude that has been particularly visible in recent years - owes its reality to Hermeticism, a body of esoteric teachings that flourished in Alexandria two thousand years ago, and which has since disappeared from the mainstream Western thought, although it was never completely suppressed. The authors trace the traces of this marvelous, all-encompassing philosophy, which has much in common with contemporary holistic thought, finding its roots in the Egyptian mysteries, and pointing to the enormous influence it exerted on medieval magi and the flourishing of the Renaissance. Their story includes many exceptional personalities, such as, for example, the Franciscan Roger Bacon and the Elizabethan magician John Dee, the prototype of Shakespeare's Prospero and his Tempest. However, the central figure of this story is Faust himself, one of the myths that characterized Western civilization.

The Elixir and the Stone is an extremely rich and ambitious work that presents an alternative history of the intellectual world. Alchemists and sorcerers who have haunted the imagination of people for centuries are here, perhaps for the first time, placed in the right context. Moreover, this book offers a view of the world that can be called "alternative" in a certain sense, but also deeply historical.
