Summary

Max Jacob, Claude Valence: The Mirror of Astrology

The final edition containing excerpts from the Librum Arcandam, analogies related to each constellation, the corresponding Tarot cards, as well as the omens for each sign and the Lady of the Decade.

The book The Mirror of Astrology has a long and interesting destiny, just like its authors. It first appeared in 1919 under the title Interpreters and the subtitle "An Attempt at a Psychological Classification According to Planetary Concordance" in the Siren edition (Editions de la Sirène). The author of this book was Conrad Moricand, that is, the one who later signed himself as Claude Valance. For this edition, the foreword was written by none other than Max Jacob, already a friend of Morikan. Jakob writes in this preface that "the game is a hypothesis, the game of a poet, and the writer of this book is a poet". Jakob also praises this "catalogue of types", and astrology as the science of character. He was not only a poet, writer, famous Parisian dandy and one of the most interesting personalities of the golden age of Montmartre and Montparnasse, but also a key figure in this circle when it came to esoteric sciences of all kinds and new experiences, such as narcotics and drugs. Jakob knew astrology well, and according to some sources, he was the one who discovered the talent of Conrad Moricand and persuaded him to start studying this science. Max Jakob, however much he remained in the shadow of many contemporaries, was one of the precious figures of the first half of the 20th century. He was surrounded by painters, besides Picasso, whose friend and favorite poet he is.
