Summary
Andre Blanc: Western Croatia
A study in human geography
Andre Blanc's book La Croatie occidentale. Etude de geographie humaine (Western Croatia. A study in human geography) - originally a doctoral dissertation defended at the Sorbonne in Paris, printed by the university's Institute of Slavic Studies in 1957 - after almost half a century, it appears in a Croatian edition. This book, which is almost unknown in our country - outside the narrow professional circle - acts as a challenge even today: primarily visually, with its scope (499 pages of very small type), and then with the multiple interdisciplinary layering of its content and the richness of the documentary "background". It certainly intrigues us with the almost unknown name of the author, then with its unusual title "Western Croatia", but also with the subtitle "Study in Human Geography". Many will probably first ask what such a book has to do with a research project of the Institute for Croatian History of the Faculty of Philosophy in Zagreb. There will probably still be the majority of those who will be interested in why such a demanding and undoubtedly expensive publishing venture is being realized in our country today. I will try, as briefly as possible, to answer all these hypothetical questions, starting with the unknowns myself...
