Summary

Klement Grubišić: In originem et historiam alphabeti sclavonici glagolitici vulgo hieronymiani, disquisitio antiquitatis populorum septentrionalium, reique litterariae sclavonicae et runicae studiosis a Clemente Grubissichio proposita

Book In originem et historiam alphabeti sclavonici glagolitici vulgo hieronymiani ("Discourse on the origin and history of the Slavic Glagolitic script, commonly called Hieronymic") is the work of the Croatian philologist and historian Klement Grubišić, printed in Venice in 1766. In it, the author investigates the origin of the Glagolitic script, its age and connection with the Slavic cultural heritage, and compares it with other ancient scripts of Northern Europe, including runes.

Grubišić tries to prove the great age of Glagolitic and discusses the then widespread theories about its origin. Today, many of his assumptions have been rejected, especially the claim that the Glagolitic script was not created by St. Cyril, but an older, ancient author. Nevertheless, the book is important as a valuable monument of the Croatian Glagolitic tradition and the history of Slavic philology.
