Panorama della Costa e delle Isole di Dalmazia

Rieger Giuseppe

Summary

Giuseppe Rieger: Panorama della Costa e delle Isole di Dalmazia nei viaggi Piroscafi del Lloyd Austriaco

View of the eastern Adriatic coast from Cape Komparo at the entrance to the port of Pula to Budva in Montenegro. The first edition was published in 1850, a year before the edition in question. The condensed panorama shown in an uninterrupted sequence was assembled by gluing into a strip 11.85 m long, which was folded into 41 sheets and bound in a cardboard cover. Geographical nomenclature and geographical directions are printed above and below the panoramic view. The panorama - as well as the panorama of Costa occidentale dell' Istria, first published in 1845 - was created for the needs of Austrian Lloyd's shipping industry by Trieste watercolorist Giuseppe Rieger, primarily using panoramas printed in the atlas Carta di cabottaggio del mare Adriatico, and with a tour of the terrain for an artistic insight into the appearance of the coasts. Both editions of the panoramas are conditioned by the Trieste - Dalmatia steamship line of the Austrian Lloyd, opened on August 20, 1838, on which Lloyd's steamships traveled from Trieste along the west coast of Istria, along Cape Kamenjak and on to Mali Lošinj - Zadar - Šibenik - Split - Hvar - Korčula - Dubrovnik - Herceg Novi - Kotor. Therefore, it is clear that precisely these landscapes are depicted on Rieger's panoramas. Although the reason for their preparation, lithography and printing was tourist promotion of the eastern Adriatic coast and islands, primarily to increase the number of passengers on Lloyd's steamship lines and in this connection to induce tourism, Rieger's panoramas could also be used by sailors of the time in practical navigation of the same sea waters. Since both volumes, with minimal adjustments, were issued more times than navigation practice would require, and the panoramas also have artistic qualities, there is no doubt that they were indeed accepted by the passengers of Lloyd's steamships.

Giuseppe Rieger - watercolorist from Trieste. In the forties of the 19th century, he created two books of panoramas of the eastern Adriatic, using primarily the panoramas printed in the atlas Carta di cabottaggio del mare Adriatico, but also visiting the field for an artistic insight into the appearance of the coasts - Costa occidentale dell' Istria (view of the coast of Istria from Trieste to Pula, 1845) and Panorama della Costa e delle Isole di Dalmazia (view of the eastern Adriatic coast from Cape Komparo near Pula to Budva in Montenegro, 1850). Both editions of the panoramas are conditioned by the steamship line of the Austrian Lloyd Trieste - Dalmatia, opened on August 20, 1838, but, of course, other seafarers could also use them. However, the main purpose of publishing the books was to increase the number of passengers on Lloyd's steamship lines and, related to that, to initiate tourism.
