In the first volume, the author discusses Dubrovnik's political and cultural history, and in the second, he gives a chronological overview of Dubrovnik writers by gender and type. The work has long served as an important source for many historians of literature from Pavel Jozef Šafařík and Šima Ljubić to the present day.
Francesco Maria (Franjo Marija) Appendini (Poirino, 6 November 1768 - Zadar, 30 January 1837) - Italian and Croatian historian, literary historian and linguist. He completed his studies in theology in Rome, was ordained and was sent to Dubrovnik, where he was appointed professor of rhetoric. Since 1792, professor and director of the Dubrovnik institute Collegium Ragusinum. Since 1835, director of the lyceum in Zadar. He wrote very little in the Croatian language. He mainly dealt with cultural history.
