Summary

Milena Dragičević-Šešić: Indian Theatre: Tradition and Activism

Research Journal

The book Indian Theatre: Tradition and Activism by Milena Dragićević Šešić, a professor at the University of Arts in Belgrade, is both a "travel book, shamelessly personal" and a "scientific work, based on an interdisciplinary approach and numerous theoretical and empirical methods. ." It depends on the reader, says the professor, how it will be read - as a book about India, about Indian theater, about female leadership, about entrepreneurship and innovative management in culture... or in a completely different way.

The travel and research diary that forms the central part of this book was created during a tour of about fifteen theaters and theater groups in India in 2010. In her comprehensive and original presentation of contemporary theater practices in India, the author analyzes the cultural and social context in which they develop.

"Beginning as a travelogue and research diary, this book has grown into an exciting presentation of contemporary Indian theater practice. It deals not only with the forms of theatrical organization, but also with the deep cultural and social contexts of complex performance forms in contemporary India, forms of emancipation and solidarity that theater practice and education brings. Before us is one of the few works of world theater that deals with the contemporary theater practice of India, and not only with traditional theater and dance forms" Aleksandra Jovićević, La Sapienza University, Rome

"Transcultural research is in its form completely appropriate to the content, which testifies to the other and different from the perspective of the author's thoughtful and truly lived interculturality, and it is the only appropriate way which Dr. Milena Dragićević deals with, and that is transdisciplinary writing. In such a process, an exact and precise scientific tool is found in the hands of the writer, and then the literary view is refracted through the prism of scientific structure, or journalism is imperceptibly transformed into confessional prose, and then at the end of the diary entry, it returns to science, in the scope of over 100 pages of pure text photos and contributions, the manuscript of the book Indian theatre: tradition and activism by Milena Dragićević Šešić in regional literature, and even in a broader framework, truly represents a rare work about theater, and that for several equally important and valuable reasons."   Darko Lukić, University of Zagreb

"The book offers not only a significant insight into Indian cultural and theater practice, but also a lasting contribution to current ideas, theory and practice of theater and performing arts studies and cultural policy studies. This inspiring work will, we hope, contribute to further deepening cultural ties between India and Serbia, as well as to new forms of cooperation between theater institutions and professionals of the two countries."   Milija Gluhović, University of Wawick
