Sarrazin Albertine

Summary

Albertine Sarrazin: Astragal

When it was first published, Astragal was a real sensation: describing life in a women's prison without the slightest restraint and then following its heroine through survival on the road, along with petty crime and prostitution, it was the first literary work that dealt with this topic without moral condemnation, with reality and sympathy, not offering special excuses and explanations but simply opening a view of that part of French society. To escape from prison, Anne breaks her ankle - astragalus. She is rescued by Julien, a petty criminal himself, who hides her. They fall in love with each other and stay for a while in a refuge with Julien's friends. Due to a badly performed operation in a hospital in Paris, Anne remains lame. But the eternal city offers optimism even to those who have sunk to the bottom. Although they live in an environment of petty criminals, thieves, prostitutes and similar marginal characters, they dream of a better life, more honest and happier. Only their love keeps them on the surface as the last illusion of something nobler and more beautiful than the reality in which they are anchored. After numerous anecdotes, from sewing ties in an attempt to achieve an honest life to falling again and prostitution, they end up in prison again: Julien because of her, and she because of her mistake and escape. Albertine Sarrazin writes in an excellent, almost poetic style, using the language of the street in a way that no one has used before and turning it into a stylistic device par excellence. Precisely thanks to this specific expression, this "little love novel", as the author herself called it in one text, has acquired a cult status among readers.
