Summary
David Lodge: The world is small
Here we meet again Morris Zapp and Philip Swallow, who in "Exchange" performed a temporary exchange not only of academic jobs but also of life companions. We also meet a number of more or less exalted protagonists of the world academic community, and all of them are often greedily gathered in the race for an ultra-lucrative, UNESCO-funded chair, where they will work for more or less nothing and collect huge sums of money.
The main character is Perssa McGarrigle, a young academic innocent from an imaginary Irish university behind God's feet; he travels around the globe in search of the beautiful Angelica, who seduced him at the symposium with which the novel begins. The end of the story here is more or less open, but quite hilarious episodes from the global campus lead to it.
