Summary
Philippe Collin: Bartender from Rico
In 1940, the Germans entered Paris. A curfew is in effect everywhere, except at the magnificent Ritz Hotel. Eager to discover the art of French life, the occupiers mingle with the Parisian elite, while Frank Meier, the greatest bartender in the world, stands behind the bar of the hotel's main bar.
Adaptation is the key to survival. Frank Mayer proves to be a skilled diplomat, wins the sympathy of the German officers, buys his peace, and that of his apprentice Luciano, as well as the troubled and enigmatic Blanche Ozzello. For four years, his bar has been a place where secrets are whispered, deals are made and people's fates are decided. In the luxurious interior, the Gestapo officers will drink and toast together with Coco Chanel, the evil widow Ritz or with famous artists.
And while Frank is seemingly calmly serving the guests, he leads a double life because most of them do not know that he, an Austrian by origin, a former fighter during 1914 and a famous cocktail master, is hiding a big secret about himself. Betrayal, lies and intrigue raise the stakes for the bartender - while he is always one step ahead of fate.
Philippe Collen reconstructs the turbulent era with meticulous historical accuracy and virtuoso portrays the famous bartender as the eye and ear of occupied France, whose fate bears witness to the eternal dilemma between fear and courage.
