Sanja Lovrenčić's new novel, "Crveni golubovi", is a double book: the prose text, which oscillates on the edge of fantasy and deals with the burning issues of the modern world, is complemented by the "Songbook", a collection of poetic fragments that the author wrote as sketches for individual parts of the novel.

The action of the story, which is presented in two different ways, begins with the arrival storytellers on an unnamed island. Inheriting a house in an almost abandoned village, she gets a reason to get away from the daily struggle for material existence for a while. The landscape in which she found herself is nostalgically idyllic: crumbling stone houses, wild capers, homemade cheese, sun and wind define this Mediterranean world. Everything suggests that here, at a distance from people, work and routine, a space will open for introspection, for facing one's own past, desires and hopes.

Along with the house, however, the narrator also inherited the pigeons bred by her deceased cousin, Toni. When one morning she suddenly decides to release the birds from the dovecote, she has no idea that these letter carriers will soon return to her, and in the company of quite colorful guests. The pigeons bring some of Toni's old friends to the island. They organize a three-day stay for him and begin to narrate fragments of their shared past: an aging theater troupe that wandered the Mediterranean, or active participants in the turmoil of the age of lead - it is difficult for the heroine to decide based on the stories offered. On their way out, this strange group explains to her the true nature of her newly acquired inheritance: along with the house, she also inherits the obligation to tell their story, a story she did not fully understand.
