Summary
Johan Wolfgang von Goethe: Faust
Goethe worked on his *Faust* all his life, in the period from the creation of *Urfaust* in 1772 until the completion of the second part, just one year before his death. The fate of Faust - who makes a deal with the devil driven by an insatiable thirst for knowledge - becomes the subject of a metaphysical bet between God the Father, who believes in humanity that makes mistakes but remains good in its essence, and Mephisto, the embodiment of evil. The work reflects all phases of Goethe's development: from the period of *Sturm und Dranga* (storm and urge) in his youth and the classical period of maturity all the way to his magnificent late style. The afterword includes: the historical Faust; folk books about Faust; Marlowe's tragedy and Faustian plays in Germany; the creation of Goethe's *Faust*; the Gretchen tragedy; and notes on the text.
