Summary

Vladan Jovanović: Bacteria

In all likelihood, there is a moment in the life of *Homo sapiens* when we prefer to look back rather than forward. This certainly has something to do with the time of human life, which "condenses" with age; our time does not flow at an even speed: in early youth it flows unbearably slowly, in the formative years, while we are building our own existence, we feel it the least, in maturity the mirror sends us smoke signals, and at the threshold of old age, time begins to flow unbearably fast. This is the moment when we either start recalling memories or we start stumbling over them like Pilnyakov Ivan of Moscow (although we would rather avoid it): "In the darkness of the skull hung the stalactites of time, whole mountains of ancient memories were piled up; and in the darkness of the skull there was complete opacity - the skull had grown to incredible proportions - and like a miner in a mill, Ivan wandered through that skull with a lantern in his hand and tripped over memories.” This feature of our experience is, of course, well-known and probably would not even deserve a mention if this nature of the time of our lives had not given world literature great works - probably the greatest left to us by a Frenchman whose name begins with the letter P (that's what happens when the mentioned point is crossed), and which was immortalized by Tullio Pericoli with his famous illustration. The first-person narrator from Vladan Jovanović's "non-narrative stories" (who in a rather large percentage could be the author himself) is exactly at that point; but his memories are not stimulated by olfactory stimuli like the smell of *madeleine* cookies, but by visual stimuli that act like "bacteria". Why is that word in quotes? Because it is a phenomenon that the narrator conditionally calls bacteria: while he is resting after a well-deserved work, floating on the sea with his hands folded under his head, transparent bacteria-like phenomena stir in front of his eyes - well known to all of us in such circumstances: the sea, the sun, light breaststroke or floating, and on the screen behind the closed lids some kind of "Brownian motion" takes place. What makes these "bacteria" interesting in this narrative theme is that they seemingly disappear - that is, only when they disappear do memories or ideas appear in their place...
