Schwab V. E.

Summary

V. E. Schwab: Gallant

Olivia Prior grew up in an orphanage from an early age. The only thing that ties her to the past is her mother's diary, full of strange drawings and incoherent sentences, the last of which, warning her not to get close to Gallant, is particularly intriguing. Olivia dreams of only one thing - to have her own family one day. When she finally learns that her uncle has found her and invited her to the Gallant family estate, she doesn't hesitate for a moment. But there she finds only two servants and cousin Matthew, who clearly does not want her. On top of all that, she discovers that her uncle passed away several months ago and that the residents of the magnificent building anxiously avoid the wall that rises in the middle of the luxuriant nature at the edge of the property. What evil hides there, at the bottom of that garden located at the end of the world? And what, exactly, happened to Olivia's mother all those years ago?

In Gallant, V. E. Schwab weaves a dark and original story about the place where the world meets its shadow, about life and death, and about a young woman who is called by both sides. This novel, interwoven with shadows and mysteries, resists the standard genre frameworks, and the narrative style, in which the sense of building tension and poetics are intertwined at the same time, points once again to all the splendor of the talent of the author who conquered the Croatian audience with the novel The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue. "A chilling story that blends the gothic horror of Shirley Jackson and the subtle, dark imagination of Neil Gaiman." - Publishers Weekly "The author's blend of gothic, fantasy and horror is the embodiment of all folk tales about the dangers lurking in the shadows." - School Library Journal
