The Naked Masks is a capital selection from the dramatic oeuvre of the Nobel laureate Luigi Pirandello, which was published in 1992 by Zagreb's CEKADE (Centre for Cultural Activities) in the Prolog library. The book was translated and edited by academician Frano Čale, our prominent Italianist and theater scholar, and it was edited by Slobodan Šnajder.
The selection on 631 pages includes Pirandello's most important dramatic works, focusing on the author's central philosophical-theatrical preoccupation – the gap between man's inner self and the social role (mask) imposed on him.
Through anthology dramas, the book explores:
- The relativity of truth and the impossibility of absolute knowledge
- The conflict between theater and life
- The disintegration of traditional identity and the concept of "man as a construct"
