Five years of writing, seventy drafts for the plan of the novel, a court case for violating public morals - the path to the creation of one of the most significant novels in world literature was arduous. The theme of the novel is an unhappy marriage and adultery, and at its center is the unforgettable character of Emma Bovary and her struggle against sinking into a devastating ordinariness.
