Yamamoto Tsunetomo: Hagakure - the way of the samurai
Hagakure, Hidden under (in) the leaves or In the shadow of the leaves, is a series of short stories and thoughts of a philosophical character, based on the Bushido-Way of the Warrior codex. This collection or handbook for samurai is the work of Yamamoto Tsunetomo, whose words and thoughts are recorded by the young samurai-scribe Tsuramoto Motazaemon Tashiro. This work was not intended for publication. Ha means leaf (leaves), and kure comes from the word kakureru (to hide). The work is also known as Hagakure Kikigaki Koho, denoting the recorded sayings of Yamamoto. There are other meanings, such as hidden value, hidden service, and hidden love.
