Čadež Tomislav

Summary

Tomislav Čadež: Croatian Decameron The plan of Tomislav Čadež, a long-time journalist and columnist, was ambitious from the beginning: to write the diary of an intellectual who found himself in isolation every day, without skipping a beat, and for a hundred days in a row. Asking questions, looking for answers, finding cultural and historical parallels to what happened to us... Čadež wrote the diary of a self-isolated intellectual for a hundred days and successively published it in Jutarnji list. He carried out the original idea to the end: how to skew the perspective and find a detail, an angle, invisible and obvious, so that the time of the corona becomes at least a little clearer to us, not to say closer or less foreign... All this was also a real, private diary, with intimate vignettes such as the text about the sadness caused by the footage of a looted Lego store in New York, when a completely assembled and abandoned model of a spaceship from Wars was left lying on the street after a stampede zvezda... It is also a personal chronicle of the spring months, written from Karlovac, with reminiscences of childhood, war, travels... And above all, a look at the world, observing the human pack in a state of danger: how certain countries behave in the corona, what collective psychology lies behind the fact that some countries have a frightening number of dead, and others do not, how much in the general panic found fertile ground, for example, stereotypes about the Chinese and other peoples from the Far East... Čadež's constant diary companions, great minds like Sigmund Freud or Oswald Spengler - that is, their ideas about the narcissism and arrogance of the West - served to find some of the answers behind the curtain, to understand the inappropriate and confused reaction of the Western world to the pandemic. (from the foreword by Dalibor Šimpraga)
