Summary
Annie Proulx: Close Up
Brokeback Mountain and Other Stories from Wyoming
if, unfortunately, not too well known here, Annie Proulx is one of the most respected contemporary American authors and winner of numerous literary awards. For example, she won the Pulitzer Prize in 1994 for the novel Shipping News, and the stories from this collection were awarded a total of nine prestigious awards! Of course, the most famous is "Brokeback Mountain", which, in the manner of the music industry, we have already published separately as an extremely successful "hit-single" (we believe that no one missed Ang Lee's full-length "video"). And, as the reader could see for "Brokeback", so for this entire collection of stories about modern cowboys from rural Wyoming, one thing is certain: these are stories about cowboys, but they are by no means typical cowboy stories - such as, for example, found in our edition of "Cowboy Stories" by Elmore Leonard. In contrast, here there is no conflict between good and evil, and the heroes are by no means heroes, but small people hindered by their everyday misfortunes, often strange and bizarre, which gives the stories additional charm and impressiveness.
Cowboy icon John Wayne would probably turn in his grave if he heard about such cowboys, but the author accepts them as they are and, despite their rawness, rudeness and violence, describes them sympathetically: "The people of Wyoming are sensitive, hot-blooded and eager for physical contact. Maybe it's because they spend so much time with cattle, but people here always shake hands, cheer, comfort and support each other. This instinct also applies to anger, lightning slaps to throw you off balance, elbowing, grabbing, choking, but also to more serious things that end in murders desi..."
For our readers, the collection can be additionally interesting because it offers an opportunity to discover a new view of the American West, but also to discover an unpleasant truth... Namely, if we remove the romanticized rodeo, spurs and rodeos, we are left with a bitter depiction of an environment that also has its dark, violent side, where rigidity and peculiar cruelty are common and everyday, and we are already at home there!
