Summary
Ivo Vojnović: Masquerade Under the Bath
First edition
Vojnović's drama "Maškarate under the Bath" (1922) is Vojnović's return to the theme of his hometown, a kind of continuation or epilogue of the "Trilogy" which once again talks about the decline of the nobility and the utopian mythical Freedom, this time through the unfortunate fate of their servants who also become tragic victims of the disappearance of traditions. The form of the play is completely modernist: it is interwoven with extensive didascalia and prose fragments. It is also interesting that it was premiered in Prague's Vinohrad Theater in 1923 (the play is also dedicated to Prague), and only a year later it was staged in Zagreb. - Ivo Vojnović (1857-1929) is the most prominent modern Croatian playwright, often called "the last great Dubrovnik writer".
