Summary
Đuro Vilović: Međimurje - Confessions of a Dusk
*The book has a dedication.
An intriguing and expressive short novel or longer story by writer Đura Vilović, written in 1918 and published in 1923. The plot is set in the beautiful, melancholic and lush landscape of Međimurje, where the author places his permanent and obsessive literary theme - the psychological drama and love life of a young Catholic priest, or chaplain. The main character struggles with inner demons, questioning his spiritual calling, vows of celibacy and his own human nature under the influence of strong emotions, while the titular "dusk" itself symbolizes the twilight of an era (the end of the First World War and the collapse of Austria-Hungary) and the twilight of the protagonist's previous priestly identity. Vilović, who himself served for a time as a chaplain in Međimurje before leaving his priestly vocation, brings to this work strong elements of autobiography, but also a deep admiration for the land of Međimurje, its people, melodious speech and nature. The novel is characterized by a heavy expressionist tone, lyrical descriptions of landscapes that mirror the inner turmoil of the characters, and a brave dive into the taboo corners of the human psyche and church life from the beginning of the twentieth century.
