Summary
Yūnus Emre [ju:nu's emre'], Turkish mystic and poet (? 1241 – ?, 1320 or 1321). Numerous legends are associated with his life. Although he worked in a period of great Persian and Arab influence on the Turks, he wrote in the Turkish language, using mostly the folk syllabic meter. He especially influenced the poetry of dervishes. His religious-mystical poems, written in simple language, were very popular among the people. As a symbol of all that is authentically Turkish, his poetry had a prominent place in the era of the revival of Turkish national consciousness. A copy of the manuscript of his collection of poems (Dīvān) is in the Oriental Collection of the HAZU Archives in Zagreb.
