Kadish Rachel

Summary

Rachel Kadish: The Weight of Ink

The novel The Weight of Ink, set in the 1760s and early twenty-first century, is an interwoven story of two women of exceptional intellect: Ester Velasquez, an expatriate from Amsterdam who is allowed to write for a blind rabbi just before the plague ravages the city, and Helen Watt, a sickly historian who loves Jewish history.

At the beginning of the novel. a former student invites Helen to look at hidden seventeenth-century Jewish writings, just discovered in his home during renovations. Enlisting the help of Aaron Levy, a graduate student as eager as he is charming, and racing against another fast-paced team of historians, Helen embarks on her latest project: to establish the identity of the person who wrote these writings, an elusive scribe named "Aleph".

Thriller and ambitious, sweeping in scope and intimate in tone, The Weight of Ink is a refined work of historical fiction about women who divide centuries and the choices and sacrifices they must make. in order to reconcile the life of the heart and the life of the mind.
