Summary
Vlaho Bukovac: My Life
The life story of Vlaho Bukovac, one of the most important painters from this area, can only be compared to the fate of Dickenson's heroes. Born in a mixed family, as Bjađo Fađoni, Bukovac went on his fateful journey to America in his early childhood. The idyll did not last long. After the sudden death of his uncle, he was sent to a reformatory. Determined to take fate into his own hands, Vlaho becomes a sailor, traveling three continents. However, the place did not keep him after he discovered his talent as a painter. He returns to Europe and enrolls in painting studies in Paris. The gifted artist immediately attracted attention, after which orders arrived from European courts. Vlaho Bukovac portrayed Emperor Franjo Josip, Prince Nikola, Queen Natalija, King Aleksandar Obrenović, Bishop Štrosmajer, as well as a number of people from the cultural and political life of that time.
Bukovac translated his exciting life into the book My Life, published in 1918. Written as the most exciting adventure novel, it brings true pleasure in reading, but also gives an account of not only an unusual life, but also a magnificent artistic career.
After the death of Vlaho Bukovac, the editions of his autobiography underwent major revisions, and some parts were not published. In this edition, we present the book in the form in which it was published during his lifetime, as well as parts that were not printed in later editions. Thus, after more than a century, Bukovec's completely authentic memoirs, accompanied by many archival photos and reproductions of his works, are again in front of our audience.
