The novel Parma Carthusian Monastery is about a nobleman and a member of the clergy who chooses love instead of religion. Although he is not interested in religion, Fabrice, on the advice of his aunt Gina and her lover Count Mosca, goes to Naples to study to become a priest. During his education, he embarks on numerous adventures. Upon his return to Parma, Fabrice's affair with a young actress ends tragically. The actress' manager attacks him and Fabrice kills him in self-defense...
