Char, René, French poet and essayist (L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, Vaucluse, June 14, 1907 - Paris, February 19, 1988). Participated in the Spanish Civil War and in the resistance movement. From A. Rimbaud and surrealism, he inherited boldness, unexpected metaphors, and above all, a passionate understanding of poetic creativity. After a period of complete commitment to the surrealist movement, in 1935 he gave up joint activity. The most important collection from the first period is Čekić sans maître (Le Marteau sans maître, 1934), in which the depths of the unconscious are explored with precise language. The collection of Hypnos pages (Feuillets d'Hypnos, 1946) glorifies the uprightness of man in the face of the horror of war and the humiliation of occupation. Love poetry is life-like and real, full of flickering sensuality and longing that always overcomes the sense of absurdity and despair. His entire poetry is imbued with the idea of the absolute, in harmony with the earth and man: The Sun of the Waters (Le Soleil des eaux, 1949), Searching for the Base and the Top (Recherche de la base et du sommet, 1955), Closed Windows and Doors to the Roof (Fenêtres dormantes et porte sur le toit, 1979) and others.
