Summary

Eric Van Lustbader: Šan

"Shan" is certainly Erik van Lustbader's most exciting and best novel. It is a lavish drama of different dimensions and events in China, Japan, the Soviet Union, Hong Kong and the United States of America. "Shan" is a moving story about a son's efforts to fulfill his father's wishes, to realize his life's dream: it is a tense, sophisticated story about international espionage: and at the same time it is a story about the love that is created between two strong personalities connected not only physically, but above all, spiritually. "San" begins where "Jian" ends. Jack Merock, American by mother, Chinese by father, becomes Xuan - a man entrusted by his father with full confidence to take care of China's future. Jack's father, Dian, invested all his strength and intelligence in realizing a better future for his beloved country. Aged and infirm, he hands over everything to his son with the promise that he will ensure the international dominance of his homeland. Shi Zilin, Jack's father, warns his son that he is now on a mountain - on Shan - where it is dark and dangerous, a place where people are tested and only the worthy are saved. Shan is a story about human destinies. Bliss, a beautiful and strong young woman who stands by Jack even in such a terrible place as the Dream, is selfless and willing to do anything for Jack's love and happiness. Shan is a book about spiritual disciplines and secrets of the East, about cruel war skills in which there is no mercy.
