Savremena iranska kratka priča

Summary

Contemporary Iranian short story

Translated from Persian by Aleksandar Dragović, Petar Janačković, Miloš Delić, Elvir Music.

"Until the middle of the nineteenth century, Persian prose was dominated by traditional folk tales, didactic tales, fairy tales and historical and heroic sagas. The prose of that time, captured in the hands of scribes, court poets and secretaries, was mostly repeated rhythmic and rhyming texts that suited the taste and by the measures of court and state officials, completely removed from the everyday life of the people. Only with the constitutional revolution (1905-1907) and the greater penetration of modern civilization and new cultural influences did Persian prose experience fundamental changes. At the beginning of the century, the waves of modernism and change began to sweep over Iran. When choosing stories for this collection, we tried to cover as wide a period as possible and present authors who created short stories in Iran throughout the century... contains twenty-three stories that cover three key phases of the development of Iranian short fiction: the formative period (1920s and 1930s), the founding phase (1953-1979), and the period of diversity (1979-present). I hope that this selection will provide insight not only into the course of Iranian short fiction, but also into the development of style, writing technique, and how writers responded to the great changes that shaped Iranian society, especially after the Islamic Revolution. 1979."

Aleksandar Dragović, from the foreword
