Summary

Maryline Desbiolles: Cuttlefish

The narrator of the novel "Cuttlefish" is found in the kitchen, in the south of France, as she prepares stuffed cuttlefish for guests. Cooking is an art. The art of giving, the art of receiving guests, of seduction, of opening oneself to others. While she devotes herself to the anatomy of the cuttlefish with the precision of a scientist, describing in detail every step in the preparation of this dish, childhood memories, thoughts about life and death, fears and desires of the storyteller emerge.

And longing sometimes tastes like olive oil, green tomato marmalade or currant jelly.

Each stage of the recipe introduces us deeper into the storyteller's psychology. Her lived fears, hopes, her life's joys are revealed to us, memories of long-ago loves, of travels, of the forgotten smells of cities, constantly returning to the present of preparing stuffed cuttlefish, where the restlessness due to the uncertainty of the success of the meal and the dinner itself among friends merges with the joy of storytelling created by the synesthesia of taste, smell, color and texture of all the ingredients and spices that make cooking and enjoying food a pleasure.

This an intimate, lyrical novel with a Mediterranean flavor is a study of food, but also of life in all its differences and contradictions, a deep dive into time. It is a story about memory, about the relationship to the body, to others, a psychological study of human nature written with the meticulousness that the preparation of this Mediterranean specialty requires.

After reading, what remains are tastes and smells, boiling and spice-soaked anecdotes of a life that could be anyone's. And of course, the recipe for stuffed cuttlefish in the French way.
