This tragicomic novella from the Second World War about the growth of a young man into a man is probably the most famous text of the famous Czech writer Bohumil Hrabal. The novella does not capture the war in its immediacy, but rather its secondary, somewhat absurd, but undoubtedly cruel impact on everyday life. A special weapons transport escorted by the Germans is due to arrive at the small railway station. Our heroes decide to blow up the shipment, which they succeed in, but two young lives are tragically extinguished at the same time: our Czech hero and an unknown German soldier.
Recognized master of the Czech novel, Bohumil Hrabal, gained real popularity beyond the borders of his country only when his short novel "Strictly Controlled Trains" was made into a film, which was awarded the Oscar as the best foreign film in the USA in 1968. This book is supplemented by another longer novel by Hrabal (Bambini di Praga 1947) and two shorter ones (You want to see the golden Prague and Diamond Eye), which form a certain whole about this writer.
