Tko je taj čovjek?

Dežulović Boris

Summary

Boris Dežulović: Who is that man?

Boris Dežulović has been known by the public in our region for almost forty years as a satirist, humorist and pamphleteer in a better sense of the word, as an anarchic political analyst and as a poet of the torture chamber in Split's Lora in 1991. At the same time, however, the same Dežulović is a melancholic and dark writer of the Central European provinces from the end of the nineteenth century, a time when in Germany gave birth to National Socialism. One obsessive theme characterizes both novels of that other Dežulović, Christkind and Tko je taj čvejm: What had to happen to avoid the emergence of demons? The meaning of that question is not in writing a better, even alternative past, nor in the escapism of alternative histories. The point is in moral responsibility, in the effort to remain responsible. What will surely enchant the reader in this novel is its almost frightening authenticity and believability. Indeed, the writer, or that famous narrative subject, is present on the spot. He is in time and even in the language of events. This is a great German novel, written by a European outsider, a Croatian amateur winemaker, a native of the Dalmatian village of Piska. A bombshell novel that wakes us up from a dogmatic slumber.
