Summary
Titus Makcije Plautus: Fortress
*Underlined with a marker
The inscription on Plautus' tomb - Since Plautus was taken away by death, comedy mourns, the stage is deserted... - testifies to the influence that the mentioned author had on the history of world comedy. One of Plaut's most famous comedies, Aulularia, was translated into Croatian under the titles Tvrdica, Škrtac and Ćup. The story follows the old skunk Euklion who finds a jar of gold and constantly watches over it. The motif intertwines with the motif of love between Euklion's daughter and the young Lykonides. In addition to avarice, through the figure of old Megadorus who also wants to marry Euklion's daughter, old man's lust is mocked. The type of snort that this Plautian comedy brings is one of the most common in the comedies of later centuries. Plaut is a role model for both Moliere (Škrtac) and Držić (Skup). Držić himself says about his comedy that it was all stolen from some book older than Staros, - from Plautus; they lay it on the children's table.
