Evil Souls, also known as Furies or Impure Forces, is a masterpiece by Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoevsky from 1872. The novel is a deep political and psychological study of nihilism, inspired by a real event – the murder of the student Ivanov by the revolutionary group of Sergei Nechaev in 1869. In the novel, Dostoevsky explores the devastating impact of radical ideologies on the individual and society. The novel is considered the most authentic record of the nihilist movement in Russia that preceded the revolutionary turmoil. It shows the conflict between "fathers" (liberal idealists of the 1840s) and "children" (radical nihilists of the 1860s) who reject all moral and social norms. The characters question the existence of God, free will and moral responsibility in a world without spiritual foundations.
