Summary

Silvija Pisk: Hermits at the foot of the Garić mountain

The Pauline monastery of the Blessed Virgin Mary on Garić (Moslavačka gora) and its role in regional history

During its almost 300 years of existence, from a small and poor hermit community, the Pauline monastery of the Blessed Virgin Mary on Garić (Moslavačka gora) became a significant feudal lord with numerous properties that included arable fields, meadows, forests, vineyards, ponds and mills. They also owned entire villages and several manors, and in addition to serfs (jobagion) they also had various servants. They acquired possessions through donations, leases and purchases. Donation documents and writings of various provenances provide an insight into other components of Pauline life, not only into their privileges, gifts and lawsuits. Lawsuits were mainly initiated due to property disturbance, non-observance of wills, and various violence done to them and their serfs. Sometimes, also, the Paulines and their actions were the subject of lawsuits. They did not live in seclusion and during their existence they interacted, except with the local population and other Pauline monasteries, and with all segments of society, both secular and ecclesiastical, up to the highest ecclesiastical and secular instances. The monastery enjoyed a great reputation, had the support of the nobility and royal families, and also served as a place to store valuables. The latest research shows that it is the oldest Croatian Pauline monastery, and along with Remete, the most important in medieval Slavonia.

Analyzing and trying to reconstruct both the appearance and the history of the monastery on the basis of numerous medieval documents and recent archaeological research, we try to investigate and process the historical importance of the Pauline order in Croatia and Central Europe, as well as the role and meaning of the said monastery in this part of Croatia.
