Wanger Isabel

Summary

Isabel Wanger: At our table The story of new voices is as old as mass literary production, that is, approximately three centuries. In today's age, it is often just a platitude used to push an unknown author to the audience, but it seems that regardless of all the wear and tear of that phrase and the social networking that in a few hours, and sometimes even minutes, makes new things already seen, these new voices still exist in some places. And when they are authentic, they show up where no one expects them. In the German-speaking world, it is not in vast Germany, where thousands of young authors write solidly, it is not in literary underskinned and craft-conscious Austria, where young authors make great efforts to find their place on the vertical of the greats and the horizontal of the world's successful older contemporaries, but in the small and literary forgotten Lichtenstein. There, as it seems, some fresh, irrational, dark and dusky, hermetic poetics is being developed, as we have already seen in the novels Enemy and Youth, recently published in Croatian. Isabel Wanger went from Lichtenstein to the Germanistic cultural crossroads of Berlin to, like many authors of her generation, look at the European cultural panorama from that height and then combine the fragmented images of local experiences with that broad vision. In addition to a precise and merciless insight into the internal mechanisms that drive urban youth, this novel also brings one discipline already quite forgotten in the novel: a theatrical situation that takes place in a very limited time and space framework, close-up and in a big shot. As such, the novel calls for a theatrical adaptation, because everything is ideal, the number of characters, scenes, dialogues and tension - it is the God of Massacre for a generation exactly half the age of Yasmina Reza. Regardless of whether someone wants to turn Isabel Wanger's novel into a dramatic text, it is good and important that we have it in Croatian, because it is the opportunity to show local writers, readers and the cultural scene that a novel can be something completely different from difficult history, from a process in time and a product of blood and soil.
