Summary
Karl Jaspers: Mind and Existence
In the work Mind and Existence, Karl Jaspers, one of the key thinkers of the 20th century, presents his vision of the contemporary philosophical situation, deeply shaped by the work of S. Kierkegaard and F. Nietzsche. These philosophers, according to Jaspers, made a radical turn, questioning "the mind from the depths of existence" and shattering the illusion of closed, comprehensive systems. Their work marks the "breakdown of all authority" and a call for a new kind of philosophizing that is not afraid of uncertainty and contradiction. Jaspers does not seek a return to the old systems, but strives for "communicative philosophizing" that is aware of its limits, but also "complete will to communicate". He introduces the notion of the "All-encompassing" (das Umgreifende), describing it as a horizon in which everything appears, rather than as an object of knowledge. It distinguishes between modes of the Omnipresent that relate to "what we are" (existence, consciousness in general, spirit) and to "being-in-itself" (world, transcendence). For Jaspers, existence is the "source" of all these ways, the "dark basis of the battle of the self", which cannot be objectified. Truth, in Jaspers' understanding, is not dogmatic and fixed, but is "connected to communication" and becomes real through it. A "radical openness of the will to communicate" is necessary, which accepts a multitude of truths and does not strive for final, absolute knowledge. It emphasizes the importance of "mental alogic", where paradox and contradiction are not mistakes, but necessary forms of thinking that allow us to touch the "non-mental" and "transcendence". He is critical of the "rationalization of the irrational", which tries to reduce everything to conceptual categories by the power of the mind, losing the essential meaning of philosophy. The goal of philosophizing, according to Jaspers, is not "definitive insight", but "an action of thought in which our entire consciousness is transformed, the way in which being is present to us".
