Alexis de Tocqueville: On Democracy in America
Alexis de Tocqueville was a distinguished French jurist of the 19th century who in 1831, together with G. de Beaumont, officially traveled to America, in order to get acquainted with the legislation of the new society of the USA, which did not have an aristocratic tradition but immediately began to build democratic institutions on the fundamental principles of equality for all, proclaimed in the French Revolution. He was particularly interested in the criminal code, and he expressed his impressions in this book.
