Summary
Jon Wikene Iddeng: The History of Rome I - The Rise and Fall of the Republic
The first volume of the History of Rome, the Norwegian historian Jon Wikene Iddeng begins with descriptions of myths about the founding of the city, introduces us to the time of the earliest kings, the fall of the monarchy and shows us how a small city-state on the banks of the Tiber became the center of a world empire in the age of the republic through military force and political skill, how its society on that
way it changed, what made that violent expansion possible, and how in the end the Roman Republic ended up in conflicts, violence, civil wars and the introduction of the empire.
On that way, the growing empire was threatened by various powerful and intelligent enemies, armies led by men such as Hannibal, Spartacus, Mithridates and Vercingetorix, who would eventually overcome the Roman generals with well-organized and capable units. The biggest threat to the republic will actually come from within, in the form of ambitious individuals like Sulla and Julius Caesar.
