Summary

Fernand Braudel: The Mediterranean in the Middle Ages

The period covered in this book — prehistory and the ancient world — is not one that we would expect Fernand Braudel to deal with, regardless of the fact that it is the Mediterranean, his favorite subject. Nevertheless, the historian known for drawing attention to the persistence of geography and its decisive influence surely succumbed to the temptation of investigating the origins of the historical framework he had spent his life exploring. Both from the point of view of structure and details.
"Never say that prehistory is not history," writes Braudel in The Identity of France. Taj će stav u cjelosti prihvatiti svaki arheolog koji se bavi neolitskim razdobljem ili prapoviješću, ali će vjerojatno dodati: „Nikada ne recite da pronalazak pisma odvaja prapovijest od povijesti". Anyone who has worked on excavations, who has analyzed and researched the oldest civilizations of the Neolithic, Copper and Bronze Ages — and in which there was agriculture, metallurgy, and finally cities — will certainly be aware of how it is possible to describe their history, trace the emergence of identity, social fabric, competition between elites, economic changes and everyday life. What, then, is the difference between the royal dynasties whose members were buried in Ur in Chaldea and those buried in Aladza Hijik in Anatolia, around 2500 BC? Do the former belong to the "historic" and the latter to the "prehistoric" period? There is no point in making such distinctions. Scientists are constantly trying to explore the past as far back as possible, to go back to the very beginnings. This is why the historian cannot ignore the first civilizations inhabited by a sedentary population. It is here that key events take place, hierarchical societies are created, the first cities are founded, geo-cultural areas are defined and religious traditions are created. Populations turn into nations.
