Summary
Jan Pelikan: New ways: Kosovo 1958-1969
The publishing house "Službeni glasnik" published the book "NEW WAYS: KOSOVO (1958-1969)" by Jan Pelikan. It is a translation of a book that was published in Czech in 2014 (Prague: Karlova University, Filozofická fakulta).
Professor Jan Pelikan has set himself an exceptional research task. His analysis of the reality of Kosovo in the 1950s and 1960s is based on a broad heuristic basis and exceptional meticulousness. By carefully and critically searching various, unpublished archival material, statistical data, numerous secondary sources and extensive literature, he presents the complex Kosovo scene with all its participants, processes and factors before the reader. It shows all the multi-layered and seriousness of this issue, never losing sight of its Yugoslav, Serbian (republican) and international context, along with all the often contradictory influences, ideological, political, international and social background. Neither bias nor non-objectivity can be attributed to his analysis, while he resolves the intersecting motives and backgrounds of political conflicts at different levels of government, the interweaving of plans and tactics, and national ambitions. He writes about wanderings, unsatisfactory successes and failures of the social, economic and cultural modernization of the southern Serbian province, the directions and results of the emancipation of the Albanian minority, with their long-term consequences.
