Vizantija: istorija i civilizacija

Cheynet Jean - Claude

Summary

Jean Claude Cheynet: Byzantium: History and Civilization

This edition was created by combining two separate syntheses, Histoire de Byzance by Jean Claude Cheynet and La civilization byzantine by Bernard Flusin, originally published in the famous French edition "What do I know?" (Que sais-je?). Translated into a new whole, with selected additions, these texts offer a different and more dynamic view of the Byzantine world than the one that can be found in the wide range of existing productions. This difference, above all, is reflected in the approach to the basic topics of this book - history and civilization - which is based on excerpts from selected sources.

The new whole created in this way allows the reader a kind of journey through the world of the Byzantines, viewed first of all through their own eyes. Two distinguished and learned Byzantologists tackled the task of saying a lot in a concise form, presenting their own views on the Byzantine past, profiled by a long experience of scientific and pedagogical work.

This edition, adapted to students and other interested audiences who want systematized knowledge about a certain time, is complemented by notes on writers whose works are translated in excerpts, as well as glosses that facilitate access to the material, and at the same time relieve the text of tedious explanations. A significant corpus of Greek texts with comments, which were not available in our language until now, was also added, as well as a large number of selected illustrations
