Summary

Tim Flannery: The Time Lords

History and the impact of climate change on the future

Famous names like Bill Bryson, Jared Diamond or Guardian columnists seem to have competed in praising Flannery's "Time Lords": "Shocking, direct, refreshingly different..."; "If you're not already addicted to Flannery's books - you definitely will be after this one."; "It is difficult to imagine a better or more important book."

And indeed, this simple and direct reading that you are currently holding in your hands is best described as a drama - about human folly, greed and selfishness. All the damage that man began to inflict on the environment a hundred years ago through industrialization may still be possible to justify with good intentions and insufficient knowledge of information, but everything that happens in the last two to three decades in Australia, China, Germany or the USA only concerns the profits of powerful lobbies that influence the governments of these big polluters.

Scientists have long since published all the key data and devised simulations and projections - however, the number of chimneys continues to grow while the surface under reduce forests. We are all guilty, and the least we can do is consider Flannery's common sense question of whether it is really too expensive to save the world. How meaningless is the protocol from Kyoto, how will we continue without the golden frog, the wonderful desert plants of the Karoo, without the Great Barrier Reef, polar bears or old spruce trees? How will we describe the winter holidays in the mountains to our grandchildren?

The message of this book is direct and unequivocal: the last five chapters are devoted exclusively to constructive, applicable or already proven solutions. Let's follow the example of the Danes, let's get informed and don't give up on a sparing and considerate attitude towards nature. Let's not be lazy, let's contribute our small part, and immediately, because there is no alternative.
