Summary
Bogoslav Šulek: Yugoslavian directory of plants
Excellently preserved copy! Bogoslav Šulek is a Slovak by birth and a Croat at heart. He completed his studies in philosophy and legal sciences in Bratislava. He was also interested in natural sciences, especially plants. He was a polymath, publicist, educator and lexicographer. Šulek is best known for his lexicographic work, which continues the rich Croatian lexicographic tradition, enriching it with new words, new meanings, phrases and scientific names for new civilizational and scientific needs. How much he mastered the Croatian language can be seen from the fact that he coined new words in that language for the scientific and civilizational achievements of the time, which he knew well. In 1879, Šulek published the Yugoslav herb directory, in which his knowledge of herbs came to the fore. In the Directory, not only Croatian but also Slovenian nomenclature is represented. That was the reason why the title contains the adjective Yugoslav. The lexicographical works earned Šulek the title "father of Croatian scientific nomenclature" because they are unparalleled in Croatian lexicography of the 19th century in terms of their reach, scope and approach, as well as their influence on the linguistic trends of the time and not only of the time.
