Summary
Vjekoslav Glavač: Introduction to Global Ecology
The author is a professor of landscape ecology and head of the Institute for Plant, Vegetation and Landscape Ecology at the Faculty of Biology and Chemistry of the University of Kassel (Germany). In this book, written for those who want to observe the world as a global entity and understand the problems and challenges facing humanity in the twenty-first century, the current state of the ecosphere is briefly described and the need for its rehabilitation in order to preserve life on Earth is pointed out. Earth is depicted as a planetary ecosystem in which man has become the dominant factor. Human influences on the atmosphere, hydrosphere, pedosphere and biosphere are described from a natural science point of view. In a separate chapter, the need for the immediate realization of permanently sustainable development is highlighted, which requires gradual changes in economic structures, new sources of renewable energy and raw materials, new technologies for more economical and efficient production of material goods, and the preservation of the remaining natural ecosystems and landscape areas.
