Summary

S.G.F. Brandon: Jesus and the Zealots

The book "Jesus and the Zealots" by S.G.F. Brandon, professor of comparative religion at the University of Manchester, is part of a trilogy (along with the books The Trial of Jesus of Nazareth and The Fall of Jerusalem) which very thoroughly and precisely, based on all available documents, investigates the events related to the life of Jesus and the origin of Christianity with special reference to the relationship between Jesus and the Zealots, radical Israeli patriots who fought against the Roman government. In his research, Brandon starts from the fact that according to the sources available today, it is obvious that from the Roman perspective Jesus was a political rebel, who was later condemned for inciting a rebellion, and the canonized gospels do not sufficiently explain the reasons why Pilate made such a decision. If Jesus was really considered the Messiah, if he really said himself to be the long-awaited deliverer of Israel, then surely he could not have avoided speaking out about the legitimacy of Roman rule over Judea, Brandon argues. How then to explain the fact that the New Testament Messiah had no political views? Could the reason perhaps lie in the fact that Mark's Gospel, which is older, was addressed to the early Roman Church (Christianos Romanos), the writer tried to remove any connection between Jesus and the Jewish artists who fought against the Romans? Answers to this and other similar, still relevant and delicate questions related to the life of Jesus and the period in which he lived and worked, can be found in this interesting study by S. G. F. Brandon, certainly still today one of the greatest authorities for the study and development of early Christianity.
