Summary
Vladimir Gausovič Erman, Eduard Naumovič Temkin: Myths of Ancient India
Mythology of ancient India represents a necessary and one of the most important elements in its rich and specific spiritual culture, whose heritage we have not lost a keen interest in until today. It is impossible to understand the monuments of ancient literature and art of India without knowing its mythology, just as it is impossible to understand the sculptures of Phidias or the poetry of Horace without knowing the ancient myths. This does not only apply to monuments. Starting from the Renaissance, the characters of ancient mythology entered the flesh and blood of European culture, and it is difficult to imagine an educated person who does not have even the most basic representations from that area. In the same way, the mythological representations of the ancient Hindus were not only reflected in Sanskrit literature, but continued to nourish the spiritual life of the people throughout the ages, until our days, and, spreading beyond the borders of India, entered the literature and art of the countries of the East that suffered the influence of Indian culture.
