The German dialect of the city of Osijek, called "Essekerisch", was created from several Bavarian-Austrian dialects. Today, only a very small number of Esekers can be found who speak this dialect without major problems. Everyone lacks words.
After Velimir Piškorc's Germanisms in the languages of Đurđevića Podravina and Theo Binder's German loanwords in the Croatian speech of Osijek (The paper is a translated, expanded and editorially prefaced version of Theo Binder's doctoral thesis "Die deutschen Lehnwörter in der kroatischen Essegger Mundart", defended at the University of Vienna in 1956), this dictionary is the third in a series of works of the library of the New Zagreb Germanic Studies.
