Summary

Dictionary of Sociology

Dictionaries of sociology should establish a balance between always new intellectual discussions within the developing discipline, which on the one hand requires the inclusion of new entries on contemporary issues that are considered important and permanent, and on the other hand, appreciation of the importance of the classic sociological tradition. Therefore, this dictionary strives to show all the diversity and complexity of the classical heritage while keeping pace with new intellectual needs. The authors particularly had in mind the intellectual demands of sociology students for systematic introductions to key terms, exhaustive discussion of the main theorists, and expert commentary on important social changes in industrial society. The dictionary was designed with the aim of being informative, argumentative and instructive. Efforts were made to make it easy to use, which is why it provides an extensive bibliography from the field of contemporary and classical sociology, entries that systematically cover given topics, terms and authors, and the latest data from several fields. A system of cross-references allows readers to research a specific question within a group of interrelated concepts. Lists of included entries in Croatian and English, around 1000 of them, are attached to the basic dictionary, which will make it easier to navigate through the contents of this dictionary, but also be useful in various translation issues, especially considering the fact that this is the first dictionary of sociology in the Croatian language after a gap of several decades.
