Ranke Leopold

Summary

Leopold Ranke: Serbia and Turkey in the Nineteenth Century

Leopold Ranke dealt with the history of the Serbs all his life. He published the book Serbian Revolution dedicated to the First and Second Serbian Uprising in 1829, at the beginning of his historiographical work. He printed the expanded edition in 1844. Then, near the end of his life, he published a third edition, almost twice as extensive as the previous ones, under the title Serbia and Turkey in the Nineteenth Century (1879). The introductory chapters are devoted to the older history, customs and culture of the Serbs, together with the new part on the history of Serbia until independence (1878), made this book a complete and thoughtful overview of Serbian history. Serbian historiography has not produced a book of such momentum since the appearance of History of various Slovenian nations (1794–1795) by Jovan Rajić. Great syntheses of Serbian history, based on carefully studied original material, will only be written by Stojan Novaković and the generation of researchers who will come of age at the beginning of the 20th century. Serbia and Turkey in the Nineteenth Century appeared in Serbian in 1892, translated by Stojan Novaković.

The work of the "father of scientific historiography" was translated by the "founder of modern Serbian historiography". It was met with rave reviews and quickly sold out. To this day, it has become a bibliographic rarity. The renewed edition of this book will confirm Leopold Ranke's high reputation in Serbian culture and stimulate new research.
